Cholesterol is not the only threat behind the meat menu while celebrating Eid al-Adha. There is still a forgotten threat, namely, Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or increased stomach acid due to cravings when eating meat.
In every Eid al-Adha celebration, people with cholesterol disorders usually know themselves not to overdo the victim's meat. However, for those with normal cholesterol levels, the threat of GERD is often ignored because they feel they have no risk whatsoever when eating meat.
A clinical practitioner from the University of Indonesia, Dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, SPD-KGEH, said GERD caused by a weakness in the valve that limits the stomach and esophagus. For those who have these risk factors, overeating can lead to GERD attacks.
"The reason that induces the onset of GERD, which may have already existed before, is due to excessive consumption of meat in a short time," Dr. Ari wrote in his e-mail to reporters, as quoted on Sunday (11/06/2011).
According to Dr. Ari, excessive consumption of meat will increase the risk of GERD if cooked with excessive coconut milk. The use of stimulating herbs such as acid and spicy will also trigger the movement of stomach contents to rise towards the esophagus.
To prevent this, Dr. Ari gave a few tips when eating meat as follows:
1. Do not eat meat excessively in a short time
2. Avoid eating meat along with innards (intestines, liver, brain, lungs, spleen)
3. Avoid spices that are too stimulating for example spicy and sour
4. After eating meat do not drink coffee, alcohol and soft drinks
5. During eating meat avoid foods that contain chocolate and cheese
6. Do not go to sleep in 2 hours after eating meat.
Dr. Ari added meat in principle is an essential source of nutrition because it has very high protein. Besides being very useful during the growth period, protein also needs to repair cells damaged by illness or due to the aging process.
But on the other hand, meat also contains fat. Fat can actually be an energy reserve, but if it is excessive, it will inhibit the gastric emptying process and increase the risk of GERD or backflow of gastric contents, including stomach acid into the esophagus.
Symptoms of chest pain or heartburn always accompany increased gastric acid to the esophagus, so it is often mistaken for heart disease. This pain also felt up to the esophagus, and if it rises steadily. Until it reaches the tongue, it will cause a sensation of a bitter taste.
Other symptoms that often go with acid reflux are a pain in the pit of the stomach, flatulence, and frequent belching. In some people, this condition also induces or triggers shortness of breath, chronic cough, rhinitis or inflammation of the nose, laryngitis or inflammation of the vocal cords, and sometimes a feeling of pain in the teeth.
